Christmas at Highland Park
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! This year at Highland Park you will have several ways to make your Christmas the best so far. Here’s a calendar of events and ways for you and your family to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
All Month– Add an ornament to the Highland Park Family Christmas tree. There’s a tree in the narthex, and we are asking everyone to add an ornament that means something to their family. This tree will be special because it will be ours.
All Month– Where are the Wise Men? You’ll notice the Wise Men (“Magi”) are not on the manger scene. They are traveling “from afar.” They are in three places in the church buildings. Each week they will get closer and closer to the manger. See if you can discover where they are (do not disturb them– they are on an important journey!). They should arrive at the manger on December 31.
All Month– Each Sunday we will add another part to the manger scene in the front of the church, unfolding the story of Jesus’s birth bit by bit for our children.
November 25– 9 and 11 o’clock– Christmas At The Movies: A Charlie Brown Christmas. We all love the scene where Linus explains the true meaning of Christmas to Charlie Brown! But there is something hidden in that scene that most of us miss. Something wonderful! Something that helps unfold the mystery of Christ coming among us!
December 9– 9 and 11 o’clock– Christmas At The Movies: The Nightmare Before Christmas. Jack Skellington tried to make Halloweentown into Christmastown, but it didn't quite work out. Still, things worked in an even better way. Maybe your Christmas has a nightmare or two in it. Joseph and Mary's did, yet God made it all work out just right.
December 16– Special Music Today! At 9 the band will be leading us in their favorite Christmas songs and at 11 the choir will present their Christmas cantata.
December 16– 9 and 11 o’clock– Christmas At The Movies: A Christmas Story. "Fragile! Must be Italian!" You've probably watched this one a thousand times, but there is something in it that tells us about Jesus you may have missed!
December 19- Christmas Caroling!!! We will be caroling at some of the places we served on Hands and Feet Day. Meet at the church at 5:30, wear your Christmas sweater, board the bus, and join us. We will go out for supper afterwards.
December 23– 9 and 11 o’clock– Christmas At The Movies: It's A Wonderful Life. Like all of us, George Bailey faces great disappointment and heartache. Clarence Oddbody, AS2 (Angel Second Class) is sent to save him. What Clarence does to save George shows us what God did in Christ to save us. (And it's not what you think!)
December 24– 6 pm- Christmas Eve Candlelight and Communion Service. One of the most meaningful services of the year. Bring your family and friends to hear again the wonderful story of the birth of Jesus.
December 25– 10 am– Christmas Day Service– this will be our sixth year of having a service on Christmas morning. Come dressed as you are, bring your favorite gift, and start the day by focusing on Jesus, the reason for the season!
December 30– 9 and 11 o’clock– The Wise Men finally make it to Bethlehem! We will celebrate Epiphany, thank God for 2017, and eagerly look forward to 2018. Out with the old, in with the new!
