Eighty years ago today, June 3, 1937, Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor, married Wallis Simpson. He had been in love with her for a while, and wanted to marry her more than anything. She had been married twice before, divorced each time. And that was a problem. Another problem- she was an American, and he was the king of the United Kingdom.
His father, George V, died in early 1936, and Edward, being the eldest son, became king.
But he loved Wallis more than anything. So on December 11, 1936, he abdicated and the throne wnet to his brother. He was king for only 326 days, the shortest reign for any monarch in their history.
He gave up power, prestige, even his reputation, for the one he loved.
Lots of us say we love Jesus. I wonder what we would give up for that love?
