Forgiveness: Heart of the Matter
Pastor Mike Henderson

Matthew 18:21-35
Then Peter came and said to him, ‘Lord, if another member of the church[a] sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times?’ Jesus said to him, ‘Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven[b] times.
The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant ‘For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves. When he began the reckoning, one who owed him ten thousand talents[c] was brought to him; and, as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, and payment to be made. So the slave fell on his knees before him, saying, “Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.” And out of pity for him, the lord of that slave released him and forgave him the debt. But that same slave, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow-slaves who owed him a hundred denarii;[d] and seizing him by the throat, he said, “Pay what you owe.” Then his fellow-slave fell down and pleaded with him, “Have patience with me, and I will pay you.” But he refused; then he went and threw him into prison until he should pay the debt. When his fellow-slaves saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. Then his lord summoned him and said to him, “You wicked slave! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. Should you not have had mercy on your fellow-slave, as I had mercy on you?” And in anger his lord handed him over to be tortured until he should pay his entire debt. So my heavenly Father will also do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother or sister[e] from your heart.’

eat our dinner that we bring to eat for ourselves, hang out, and catch up…all in a safe place with lots of space to spread out!
Where…Highland Park UMC back parking lot. Every other parking space will
be blocked in order to social distance while a center section will be open to
walk around and chat with friends and meet new ones! Just park in an open
space, drop the tailgate or set up your lawn chairs and break out the dinner that you brought!
When…Beginning Wednesday, September 9 @ 6pm. We will tailgate each

Why…This is a difficult season to meet for fellowship with loved ones and
friends or to meet new friends. Our All-Church Tailgate will give us a regular

God’s goodness…who He is & what He’s done and is doing here at Highland Park!

Building Update
In spite of the weather, COVID-19, and many other things, the new facilities are progressing! If you have not had the opportunity to stop by the church office for a tour, please call us and we’ll be glad to schedule one. Plans were to have our Consecration of the new facilities on September 13. However, things have not quite completed so that will have to wait for a little while longer.
The new Danner Garden and Courtyard is coming along, too. When completed it will be a place where people can pray, meditate, have outdoor services, and be in God’s presence. There will be some brick paved areas, along with plants and shrubs. The pavers currently being installed are the ones from the “Pathway to Life” that ran between the church and the ATTIC Youth House. There is room for more engraved pavers in memory of honor of loved ones. If you are interested in placing one there, please contact the church office.
And thanks to the contributions of many people, the port-cochere for the front of the church is well underway! It will not only define the front of the church, but will provide a beautiful and welcoming front for the facility. The sidewalks and parking areas are being constructed now, so everyone is asked to park in the Rutledge Avenue parking lot and to enter the sanctuary through the narthex doors on that side for the next couple of weeks.
